Civilian

By Taylor Armstrong

Rain falling on the window pane
but you sleep on
as I lie awake.

The violent voice of thunder
like yours the day before.

The sudden flash of lightning
illuminating the blacks and blues
across the night sky and me.

The dark water seeping in
through the floor boards
like the cold setting into my bones.

The clench of a hand,
taking up arms in our bed.

War knocking on our window pane,
but you sleep on,
civilian.
